memory lane and back again

so scott finally arrived in utah on sunday night...hooray! and thus the fun could really begin. we took a trip down memory lane on campus--and to my utter shock and horror they had completely gut renovated my beloved JKHB (the hollowed halls of chaotic academia where the gods of greek epics and Romantic poetry roamed). gone were the tatty benches and low lit halls...the new JKHB is bright and clean and newly carpeted. now tell me, how is one to wallow in tennyson or ponder shelley's defence* (*shelley's spelling) of poetry in such a bright and antiseptic space? i want my english professors hauled up in small and unkempt spaces where every square inch of desk and shelf space is crammed with anthologies and papers-- how can i honestly respect an english professor who is tidy with his office? anyway, the rest of our tour down memory lane was not so alarmingly jolting. we particularly like the new Gordon B. Hinckley alumni and visitors center. it's a beautiful building and nice to have as a place of repose on campus. next scott and i drove up the canyon to my favorite spot in provo-- south fork canyon. scott, surprisingly, had never been up there. its a secluded little canyon with a park and a few trailheads that lead up to the great western trail. i absolutely love this canyon as it was my sanctuary during my years in provo. its funny, i was going to wax transcedent in this post-- talk about my transition to adult life in new york and how removed i am from provo but in fond memory...but the words are not right right now, so a simple description of expository elements will suffice. anyway, we decided we could live in the semi-seclusion-yet-near-universities-and-civilization of south fork canyon. we also had a fun time hanging out with scott's sister kristin and her family. her little boy, jake, is a genius and kind of frighteningly verbal for a 3 year old. all in all the trip was great and we enjoyed the visit, but in the end were very glad to be back in the safe, anonymous arms of our city.
