i am currently mildly obsessed with the Blake/Duncan double suicide. morbid you say? tres, but look, they were darlings of the new york hob nobbery art scene, lovers, brilliant & beautiful. and poof, they move to LA, gain increasingly paranoid about Scientologist spies and government conspiracies, force friends to sign "loyalty oaths" and accuse rocker Beck as single-handily coreographing their demise. i was voraciously reading the article as only The Rag can tell it within its preening, self-righteous gloss...when suddenly i threw the mag down, looked up, and took notice of the gorgeous sunset before me over the hudson. after my daily jaunt down the river trail i settled on a grassy spot with a clear view of the river and reveled in the uncharacteristic-for-august 70 degree weather. and i thought, "damnit, i don't CARE about this, self-indulgent, narcissistic artists!" and i stared firmly at the bobbing yacht before me, wondering how old the hedge funder who owned it was....and again, the disdain for my own fascination and the disdain for the artists who so selfishly took themselves out of this world (poetically too- she- a cocktail of pills and burbon, he- walked into the atlantic and never came out) and the disdain for the prentiousness of the new york art scene (just like every other scene-- the fashion, the music, the design, the food scene, the brooklyn vegan scene) all reared into one giant sigh of disgust. but then, looking out over the hudson in the cool of the evening, with the trees and the people and the lovely views, the disgust subsided and the pendulum of my affection for new york calibrated itself once more. i really do LOVE this city. home.
