i'm sorry...maybe i'm missing something...but this idea of hyper ad targeting based on mining opt-in user data from social networks (lets call them what they are- user-facing, opt-in databases) is not a new concept...why is everyone so up in arms as if this is a novel concept? i understand that now Facebook may be the first to actually leverage this now with the help of its MS partnership...but its not shocking or new. can someone fill me in on why everyone is acting like this is so novel??

NEW YORK
Microsoft, the American technology giant, will pay up to 250 million dollars to detect a minority stake in the social networking site Facebook.
As reports the Wall Street Journal online, the company Bill Gates has also reached an agreement with Facebook for selling online advertising, thus overcoming the rival Google, which in turn was in the race to become partners in the website.
Under the terms of the agreement, as reported by sources close to the two companies, Microsoft will acquire a share of around 1, 6% of Facebook, valued at around 15 billion dollars.
The agreement comes after intense negotiations and pressure from Microsoft, but also Google, remained at stake in this transaction. In recent weeks, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer had corteggiato company Palo Alto, California, founded three years ago and currently has 48 million users.
Facebook plans to expand at international level, including through the creation of versions of the site translated into different languages, this agreement opens the opportunity for Microsoft to distribute advertising outside of the United States.
The social networking is a rapidly growing phenomenon, especially at international level. According to data published by research company Datamonitor, by the end of the Asia totalizzerĂ 35% of the total users of such sites, Europe, Middle East and Africa 28%, North America 25% and the Central and Latin America 12%.
...I'm thinking only for a money. Unfortunately, the money is the strongest of all

right, i understand the acquisition will now enable FB to leverage the personal data of its social graph for targeted advertising like we have unseen as of yet...this post was acutally posted on another blog and was more or less directed at the tech 2.0 & ad communities as the idea of leveraging the social graph for advertising is not a new or novel one..and for some reason the high level tech 2.0 and ad blogs are discussing it as if it were...
it's a conspiracy
it's a ball soap of web 2.0!!!!
